Even at nearly three in the morning, the station is active: a half-dozen taxis idle near the main entrance, vendors man carts of sandwiches and mineral water, and grungy backpackers emerge rubbing their eyes, disoriented by the city they are in. A couple of city policemen stand on the curb giving directions to confused tourists. This perpetual motion and the presence of police make the station both a risky and a strategically useful location for fugitives.

The Decoy

Sophie pulls her SmartCar into a red zone behind the line of taxis, despite plenty of legal parking across the street. She gets out, hurries to the window of the taxi in front of them, and speaks to the driver. Langdon watches as she hands the driver a big wad of cash. The taxi driver nods and then, to Langdon's bewilderment, speeds off without them. Sophie then heads for the train station entrance, telling Langdon they are buying two tickets on the next train out of Paris. This staged departure is designed to make the police believe they have fled by rail.

The Purchase and Destruction of Tickets

Inside the station, Sophie guides Langdon to the ticket window and instructs him to buy two coach tickets to Lyon with his credit card, knowing the transaction can be traced. The train to Lyon is departing in seven minutes from quay three. Instead of boarding, Sophie leads Langdon in the opposite direction, through a side lobby, past an all-night cafe, and out a side door onto a quiet street on the west side of the station. A lone taxi sits idling by the doorway. As their new taxi pulls away from the station, Sophie takes out the newly purchased train tickets and tears them up, rendering the seventy-dollar expenditure a deliberate, disposable decoy.

The Gare Saint-Lazare episode functions as a classic misdirection in the thriller plot. Sophie's quick thinking uses the station's infrastructure—the ticket window, the departure board, the train schedule—to create a false trail for Bezu Fache and the DCPJ.
